The Niagara winery that was a fruit cannery boasts one of the best affordable Gewurztraminer wines

Strewn Winery’s 2019 Two Vines Riesling Gewurztraminer has a strong floral aroma and tastes of apricot and peach with slight overtones of honey. Gewurztraminer fruit grows well in cold climates and typically acquires a higher sugar content when it ripens. This wine is a blend of Gewurztraminer and Riesling and is aged in stainless steel barrels, so it’s naturally sweet and somewhat citrus-like at the same time. It’s incredibly affordable at $13.95.

Learn food pairings on-site at Strewn Winery’s cooking school

The cooking school kitchen can hold up to 32 cooks at once and is outfitted with 3 fridges, 2 ovens, 4 work tables, and 4 gas stovetops. After cooking for the length of a class with Jane, participants sit down to enjoy their meal together with some of Strewn Winery’s premium wine.

Niagara wine-making has replaced fruit farming and canning

Strewn Winery has kept part of the original canning company building that operated until the 1940s

As a Niagara winery that was a fruit cannery, Strewn Winery was built on the site of the Niagara Canning Company which operated until the 1940s. The remains of the canning buildings are still visible at the Strewn winery location.

Strewn Winery enjoys a location with an extended growing season, due to its proximity to both the Niagara River and Lake Ontario which give it extra warmth.
